Criminal History Check Process

To complete a national police check online, you’ll need to select the type of check required and submit your ID documents.

1. Determine the Purpose of the Police Check

Identify why the police check is needed

  • Employment (include field for Job title/position and organisation name)
  • Volunteering (include field for Unpaid job title and organisation name)
  • Student Placement
  • Licensing or registration (include field for type of licence or registration and name of licence issuing body)

2. Complete the Application Form

Provide the following details:

  • Full legal name (and any previous names) Gender
  • Date and place of birth (if place of birth is Australia, need town and state) (if born overseas, need country only)
  • Residential address history (at least 5 years)
  • Contact information (email + phone)

3. Identity Verification

Collect 3 identity documents:

  • Commencement of Identity document (e.g., birth certificate or passport)
  • Primary Use in the Community document (e.g., driver’s licence)
  • Secondary Use in the Community documents (e.g., Medicare card)

Confirm facial identity (if photo ID is included)

Match the applicant’s personal information across documents

Need to use Document Verification Service (DVS)

4. Obtain Informed Consent

Before proceeding, the accredited body must obtain:

  • Signed informed consent (digital)
  • Consent must:
    • Be freely given
    • Outline what data will be collected, used, and disclosed
    • Be retained for audit purposes (for 12 months, minimum)

5. Submit Application to ACIC

Using the National Police Checking Service Support System

  • Data is formatted and submitted electronically to ACIC
  • Accredited body may batch applications if dealing with volume clients

6. ACIC Matching Process

ACIC performs automated name matching against national databases:

  • Name and date of birth are matched against police records
  • If a potential match is found, it triggers a manual review by relevant police jurisdiction(s)

7. Receive Result from ACIC

We’ll pass on your info to the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission to process your national police check.

  • The result is returned to the accredited body via secure channels
  • Outcomes are:
    • No Disclosable Court Outcomes (NDCO), or
    • Disclosable Court Outcomes (DCO) with details
